Comedian Bill Maher Jokes About Taking Mail-Order Bride Business From Russia To The Philippines

Bill Maher, an American stand-up comedian, political commentator and host of Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO posted on his Facebook page a joke about transferring mail-order bride businesses from Russia to the Philippines.

Maher joked about threatening to take away the lucrative mail-order bride industry out of Russia in light of reports that Russian military has moved artillery units into Ukrainian territory. Time reported that the Russian artillery units already started firing at Ukrainian forces. U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said that they've seen Russian artillery and military equipment being moved into Ukraine territory.

In the joke he posted on Facebook, Maher suggested threatening Russia to take their artillery and military equipment out of Ukraine or else the mail-order bride business which is quite lucrative there will be taken straight to the Philippines.
Joke or not, the fact remains that there is a law in the Philippines that prohibits the business of facilitating marriages between foreign men and Filipina women. Known as Republic Act 6955 or the Anti-Mail-Order Bride Law, this was enacted way back in 1990. In 2013, a bill was filed by Congressman Cinchona Gonzales with the goal of extending the law to internet services.
