Sean Ellis' Award-Winning Film 'Metro Manila' Is Getting A Bollywood Treatment

Metro Manila, the gritty 2013 crime drama directed by Sean Ellis is being remade by Bollywood. According to IndiaTvNews, the remake which carries the title City Lights will be released in India on May 1. Directed by Hansal Mehta, it will star Rajkummar Rao as the lead character named Deepak Singh. Starring with him is Patraleka who will be making her film debut.

The remake seems to stay very close to the original plot in Ellis' Metro Manila. The same report form IndiaTvNews states "The movie is based on the life of a farmer in Rajasthan who comes to the city of Mumbai with his wife and daughter in hope of a better life. Their encounter with the big city and the way they tackle the rising challenges nurtured by the power of their love is what the movie is all about.".

Metro Manila which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2013 was well-received by both critics and viewers. Accolades for it include awards from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, Filmfest Hamburg, and the British Independent Film Awards.
