Books Featured On The Movie Hunt For The Wilderpeople

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an adventure comedy-drama film produced in New Zealand and released in 2016. It was written and directed by Taika Waititi. Waititi wrote the screenplay for the film based on a book by Barry Crump titled Wild Pork and Watercress. The film stars Sam Neill, Julian Dennison, Rima Te Wiata, Rachel House, Rhys Darby, and Oscar Kightley.

In one of the opening scenes of the movie, a shelf of books was prominently featured. If you are wondering about the titles of the books stacked on the shelf and the one lying on the bedside table, I've made the following list below. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a New Zealand film so it makes complete sense that majority of the books are about New Zealand. There's a total of 16 books featured in the scene. I was only able to identify the titles of 11 of the books. So here they are:

1. Quake Cats: Heart-Warming Stories of Christchurch Cats by Craig Bullock
"These affecting Christchurch earthquake cat stories are perfect for all cat lovers. There are odd and quirky stories, funny stories, sad stories and stories that will surprise you or make you chuckle. Quake Cats includes inspiring tales of cats who were lost but then reunited with their owners, and the many narrow escapes of miraculous cats with nine lives."

This latest edition has been refreshed by Dr Brian Gill, who was Auckland Museum’s Land Vertebrates Curator for over 30 years. Discover every New Zealand animal, Maori names and enjoy the exquisite, digitally-enhanced illustrations.

3. My Wicked, Wicked Ways by Errol Flynn
"A hero to millions who adored his portrayals of Robin Hood and Fletcher Christian, Errol Flynn (1909-59) lived a life that far surpassed any adventure he ever acted out on screen: exotic travels, criminal exploits, passionate love affairs, violent confrontations, scandals, and international fame. In this highly readable, witty and colourful autobiography, reissued by Aurum Press in B-format using the original uncensored text, Flynn reveals himself and his remarkable life as he did nowhere else."

4. New Zealand Sea Anglers' Guide by Raymond Doogue and John Moreland

Northern Lights: A Journey To Love (A Filipino Movie Starring Piolo Pascual And Yen Santos)

Northern Lights starring Piolo Pascual.
Northern Lights: A Journey To Love is a Filipino romantic drama film starring Piolo Pascual, Yen Santos, and Raikko Mateo. Directed by Dondon Santos, Northern Lights tells the tale of two people looking for something and someone in their lives. The glue that connected them together is a young child whose mother is on the brink of dying.

Formerly titled Once In A Lifetime, Northern Lights was shot in Queenstown which is a resort town along the coast of New Zealand's South Island. New Zealand was used as a substitute for Alaska which is among the main settings in the film. The movie took its name from the famous northern lights in Alaska. This is a natural phenomenon more popularly known as the Aurora Borealis. It can be observed in North America and parts of Europe.

Northern Lights is a collaboration project by Star Cinema, Regal Films, and Spring Films which is Pascual's own film production company. In the movie, Piolo plays an OFW in Alaska named Charlie. When he moved to Alaska with his parents, Charlie left behind in the Philippines his already pregnant girlfriend. He promised to come back for her but when he did, he found out that his girlfriend met another man. Dejected, he went back to Alaska and lived a promiscuous life.

Things changed when Charlie learned that his former girlfriend is dying and that she's sending their son (Charlie Jr.) to Alaska to live with him. Charlie Jr. met another passenger on the plane named Angel (played by Yen Santos) who served as her travelling partner and guardian for the trip. The three characters convene in Alaska and embark on a journey that will change the course of their lives forever.

Also starring in Northern Lights: A Journey To Love are Tirso Cruz III, Joel Torre, Sandy Andolong, Maricar Reyes, Glydel Mercado, Jerald Napoles, Anna Vicente, K Brosas, and David Chua. The movie will be released in theaters on March 29. Prior to appearing in Northern Lights, Pascual starred in last year's Love Me Tomorrow and A Lullaby To The Sorrowful Mystery.

Nebrida, the movie also stars Christopher de Leon, Gabby Concepcion, Dina Bonnevie, Sandy Andolong, Joem Bascon, Ivan Carapiet, and Jerico Estregan.

3. Footnote - "An entertaining movie."
4. The Tree of Life - "Everything's amazingly shot and not only is it an accurate and honest portrayal of the family unit in the 1950s, but it's an accurate portrayal of life as a young boy and losing your innocence. See it."
5. Senna - "What I love about this movie is that there's so much footage, it's able to play off as a drama unfolding before your eyes rather than a documentary of something that happened in the past."
6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - "This is one of the few cases of an American remake of a foreign language film being as good as the original. It's a real crowd-pleaser even though the content may be disturbing for some viewers."
7. Le Chat du Rabbin (The Rabbi's Cat) - "It's clever, self-aware, politically-aware and plenty stylized whenever it gets the opportunity. It's nice to see an animated movie with such balls that it isn't afraid to tackle subjects like divided societies and conflict between Jews and Muslims."

The Great Raid: A Movie Inspired By The Daring Raid Of A Japanese Concentration Camp In Cabanatuan During World War II

On January 30, 1945, in the thick of World War II, hundreds of American soldiers and Filipino guerrillas launched a daring and dangerous rescue mission that led to the liberation of at least 500 prisoners of war being held by the Japanese army at a concentration camp in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.

The event is considered as one of the most triumphant rescue missions in both U.S. military and Philippine history. The raid is made even more popular by the fact that although the rescuers were grossly outnumbered by the Japanese, they suffered only a few losses while the Japanese army lost hundreds of their soldiers. Official records say that 2 American soldiers died, 2 prisoners died, and 21 Filipino guerrillas were wounded. Between 530 and 1000 Japanese soldiers were killed during the raid. Four Japanese war tanks were also destroyed.

The daring rescue mission was the subject of the film The Great Raid which hit theaters in 2005. Directed by John Dahl (Rounders, Joy Ride), the film focused its attention on the planning and the eventual staging of the rescue mission. The movie starred Benjamin Bratt, James Franco, Sam Worthington, Logan Marshall-Green, Joseph Fiennes, Connie Nielsen, and Robert Mammone. It also starred Filipino actors like Cesar Montano, Paolo Montalban, and Natalie Mendoza.

Here are a few interesting facts about the film:
1) The movie was shot within the months of July and November in 2002. It was originally scheduled to be released in the fall of 2003 but its release date was delayed several times. It eventually made its way into American theaters in August 12, 2005.
2) The makers of the film used two books as their major sources in developing the film. These are Hampton Sides' Ghost Soldiers and William Breuer's The Great Raid on Cabanatuan.
3) Filipino actors Cesar Montano and Richard Joson played the roles of Juan Pajuta and Eduardo Joson in the movie. Pajuta and Joson are the two Filipino soldiers who led the Filipino guerrillas during the raid.
4) The movie was filmed in Queensland, Australia. A replica of the Japanese concentration was built using photos and accounts about the raid. Asian students in Australia were hired to play Japanese soldiers in the film.
One of the several promotional posters for The Great Raid.
5) James Franco who played Captain Robert Prince in the movie wrote about his experiences in making the film in a novel called Actors Anonymous which was published in 2013.
6) In the actual raid, Americans used a Northrop P-61 Black Widow fighter plane to divert the attention of Japanese soldiers while the American soldiers and Filipino guerrillas creep to the concentration camp. However, in the movie, the wrong plane was used. The aircraft used in the film was a Lockheed Hudson. This was because the makers of the film can't find a Northrop P-61 Black Widow that is still working.
7) The movie bombed at the box office. It only grossed $10,769,311 which is a far cry from its production budget that was a whooping $80 million.

Alkitrang Dugo: A 1975 Filipino Film Based On William Golding's Novel 'Lord Of The Flies'

Alkitrang Dugo is a Filipino movie released in 1975 that was based on the dystopian novel Lord of the Flies by the English writer and poet William Golding (Pincher Martin, To the Ends of the Earth, The Scorpion God). The film was directed by Lupita A. Concio from a screenplay written by Nicanor B. Cleto Jr. The movie was produced by Nora Aunor.

The cast of Alkitrang Dugo included Roderick Paulate, Jingle, Efren Montes, Zernan Manahan, Angelito, Margie Braza, Rinna Peredo, Michael Sandico, Ricky Sandico, Toto Jr., and Eddie Villamayor. The film was promoted with the tagline, "Kahit na tayo'y malayo sa mga inalkitrang kalye ng Maynila, dito natin mapatutunayang tao pa rin tayo." The movie was filmed in Lipanta, Padre Burgos in the province of Quezon.

The movie's plot revolves around a group of young Filipino athletes who got stranded in a remote island after their plane crashed. The crash claimed the lives of their coach and pilot. Without an adult around to guide them on what to do, the young athletes organized themselves in order to survive. However, a struggle for leadership arose and divided the athletes into two rival groups.

Alkitrang Dugo stayed true to the events in William Golding's novel with a few major differences. One, the movie had boys and girls stranded in the island while in the book there were only boys. And two, the boys in the book elected a leader right after the plane crash. In the movie, the athletes elected leaders several weeks after they got stranded in the island.
Alkitrang Dugo was the second film to bring William Golding's classic story to the big screen. The first one was Lord of the Flies, a British adaptation that was released in 1963 and starred James Aubrey, Tom Chapin, and Hugh Edwards.

The book was once again adapted to the big screen in 1990 by director Harry Hook. The cast featured Balthazar Getty as Ralph, Chris Furrh as Jack, Danuel Pipoly as Piggy, and James Badge Dale as Simon.

An Honest Liar: A Great Documentary About The Well-Known Skeptic And Professional Debunker James Randi

James Randi who is arguably the most well-known (and the most successful) individual debunker of paranormal claims and pseudoscience is the main subject of a very interesting documentary by Justin Weinstein and Tyler Measom. Titled An Honest Liar, the movie documentary chronicles Randi's journey from a stage musician to a professional debunker. If you watch BBC, you may have seen the documentary under the title Exposed: Magicians, Psychics, and Frauds in November last year.

For people who are not too familiar with Randi and what he does, An Honest Liar makes for a great introduction into his work. Running for an hour and a half, the documentary discussed Randi's most well-known antics such as his shaming of televangelist Peter Popoff on national television, his numerous take-downs of the Israeli spoon-bender Uri Geller, and the elaborate hoax he perpetrated around a made-up spirit channeler named Carlos.

Several well-known people (mostly magicians, skeptics, science educators) make an appearance on the documentary. The rock star Alice Cooper was interviewed about the stunts that Randi cooked up for him. Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame, writer and science educator Michael Shermer, and magician Penn Jillette were also around to give their thoughts on Randi's work. Bill Nye the Science Guy got onscreen to say "James Randi is in love with the truth."
A still from the documentary An Honest Liar.
It's a well-made documentary that can be very fascinating if you are interested on things like skepticism, debunking paranormal claims, and fighting pseudoscience. Around halfway through the documentary, the focus got directed more on Randi's personal life, most especially on his relationship with his long-time partner Jose Alvarez. This abrupt change in the flow of the documentary can disinterest some people but if you are one who wishes to see a more personal side of the Amazing Randi, it's definitely worth seeing.

You can watch the official trailer for An Honest Liar here. It's unlikely that the film will be screened in theaters near you so check out the film's official website to learn more on how you can see it.

So What Are Neil deGrasse Tyson's Thoughts On Christopher Nolan's Space Saga Interstellar?

Without a doubt, Interstellar is one of the most anticipated films from Hollywood to hit the big screen this year. This is not at all surprising given the facts that it was directed by a highly-respected filmmaker (Christopher Nolan) and it starred some of the biggest names in Tinseltown (Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck).

Since being released during the first week of November, the response to the film is mostly positive. As of this writing, the film is enjoying a 73% rating from both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

Among the most common concerns by viewers about the film revolves around the accuracies (and inaccuracies) of the science portrayed in the movie. What did Interstellar get right (or wrong) about science?

Who could best answer these concerns than scientists themselves. This is why the well-known astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson recently appeared on the television show CBS This Morning to talk about the science explored in the movie.

Always articulate and bubbling with enthusiasm, Tyson engaged the show's hosts on wormholes, the mathematics behind wormholes, the difference between a wormhole and a black hole, tidal waves in outer space, and meteorites.

When asked by one of the hosts if Interstellar gets his thumbs up or thumbs down, the celebrated scientist preferred to not answer the question directly but it's quite clear from the interview that he did appreciate it in one way or another.

Prior to appearing on CBS This Morning, Tyson went on his Twitter account to review Interstellar. He had positive things to say about some of the science shown in the film like achieving zero gravity in space, Einstein's Curvature of Space, and Einstein's Relativity of Time. In one of his tweets hashtagged #Interstellar, Tyson tweeted, "In Interstellar: Experience Einstein's Curvature of Space as no other feature film has shown." Read more of Tyson's Interstellar tweets here.

It's also worth mentioning here that Tyson referred to the 1997 film Contact as a science-fiction film that has stuck with him for a long time. This was after he was asked by one of the hosts if he can name one good science-fiction film. Contact was directed by Robert Zemeckis and was based on a novel of the same name by Carl Sagan. It also starred Matthew McConaughey.

5 Reasons Why The Upcoming Filipino Movie Maria Leonora Teresa Will Suck

Pretty much every major Filipino movie that gets shown on wide release these days sucks. Just take a moment to mull over the 8 current top-grossing Tagalog films this year: 1) Starting Over Again, 2) Bride For Rent, 3) She's Dating The Gangster, 4) Maybe This Time, 5) Da Possessed, 6) Diary Ng Panget, 7) My Illegal Wife, and 8) Talk Back And You're Dead. Only an eight-year-old kid would watch any one of these movies and describe it as good.

Aside from their atrocious titles (Da Possessed? Seriously?), these movies are bad. They are so bad that calling them bad is an understatement. They are beyond bad. Unfortunately, it looks like the Philippine movie industry has no plans whatsoever of giving a stop to this parade of cinematic badness.

There's a horror film set to be released within this month called Maria Leonora Teresa that looks...yes of course, as expected...very bad. It's supposed to be a horror drama but after watching the trailer, you'd think that it's a freaking comedy. Without further ado, here are the 5 reasons why Maria Leonora Teresa is going to suck.

1) Almost zero originality. Dolls terrorizing and killing people? We've seen these a gazillion times already.

2) There's the obligatory gay character whose job is to be annoying onscreen. Why does every Filipino film has to have an annoying gay character?

3) Gullible characters who are an insult to logical thinking. Your daughter dies, a creepy psychiatrist gives you an even creepier doll as some sort of a coping tool, and you are totally fine with that?

4) Cliches, cliches, and cliches everywhere. Distant children's voices. Children laughing in the background. Sounds from a music box. Uuughhhhhh!

5) It's directed by Wenn Deramas, the guy behind movies with titles like The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin, Momzillas, Sisterakas, and Petrang Kabayo. This alone is reason enough not to waste your money on this thing.
Maria Leonora Teresa stars Iza Calzado, Zanjoe Marudo, Jodi Sta. Maria, Joem Bascon, and Maria Isabel Lopez. It's scheduled to be released nationwide on September 17, 2014.

A Walk Among The Tombstones Trailer: A Dose Of Soundgarden And Taken-esque Scenes

A woman getting kidnapped. Liam Neeson holding and talking to a mobile phone. Looks like a trailer for another installment of Taken. But it's not. It's a trailer for A Walk Among The Tombstones, an upcoming action thriller which has Neeson being hired to find another man's kidnapped wife. Based on a novel by Lawrence Block, the film is scheduled to hit theaters in September of this year.

Joining Neeson in the cast are Dan Stevens, Boyd Holbrook, Ruth Wilson, Sebastian Roche, and Whitney Able. The film was written and directed by Scott Frank (The Wolverine, Marley & Me, The Lookout). The song featured on the trailer is a cover by another artist of Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden.

Brilliant Stop-Motion Animated Short Featuring Ocean Scenes Created From Man-Made Objects

Calling Adam Pesapane talented is a huge understatement. The American director and animator who goes by the nickname PES is beyond talented. His body of work is pure genius. Simply bloody creative.

A recent work of his is The Deep, a stop-motion animated short featuring ocean scenes and starring creatures made from metallic man-made objects. It's extraordinary as expected. Now, can somebody please get Pesapane to turn this short film into a full movie? I'd watch it, for sure.

'Dota: Nakakabaliw' Is Philippine Filmmaking At Its Worst

I haven't seen the film but I have seen the trailer, the poster, and the overall plot. Based on what I have seen, I don't expect anything good that can come out of this atrocity of a film.

Making a film about an online video game is not itself a bad idea. The makers of the film are probably thinking that there's no way that they can lose given the hundreds of thousands of young folks in the country who are currently addicted to Dota. However, reactions from real Dota players are mostly negative.

What boggles me is that this movie is actually being shown in cinemas. Oh well, they are probably doing something right. Something that we don't know about. Anyway, below are the trailer and poster for the film.
